Starlink’s own maritime plan lineup changed again this month. Personal Maritime now covers boats up to 60 feet, up from 40, and most of what’s written about “Starlink for boats” online hasn’t caught up yet. This page has. A boat is not a house with a wetter yard, and it is not an RV that happens to float. The mount has to survive vibration and salt rather than wind and snow load, the cable has to follow routes the vessel already has rather than a wall cavity, and the antenna has to keep clear sky above it while underway rather than while parked.
None of that is difficult, but it is a genuinely different job from a roof mount, which is why marine work on this site has always been priced and scoped separately. Before booking anything, it’s worth running a baseline test at speedtest.net from the marina Wi-Fi you’re currently stuck with, so you have a real number to compare against once Starlink is up.
Starlink Installation for Yachts and Boats: Which Kit Belongs on a Boat
The Flat High Performance kit is the hardware behind both the Personal Maritime and Global Priority plans, and for a reason: per Starlink’s own specification sheet, it carries a 140° field of view, is rated IP56, survives wind speeds above 174 mph, and operates from -30°C to 50°C — genuinely marine-grade numbers, not residential ones stretched to fit. It draws an average of 110-150 watts, noticeably more than the Standard or Performance kits’ 75-100 watts each, which matters directly for how the boat’s electrical system needs to be sized. One detail worth knowing before the technician ever shows up: Starlink’s own spec sheet calls for mounting the dish at an 8-degree angle for rainfall, so a perfectly flat mount is not actually the correct install.
For a smaller day boat, a tender, or a dinghy where that much throughput and power draw is unnecessary, the Starlink Mini, averaging 25-40 watts, is the honest answer — it asks far less of a smaller battery bank and is easy to stow when not in use.
The Standard dish has no marine rating and is not built or positioned by Starlink for a boat. If you already own one and are hoping to press it into service on a vessel, we’ll tell you plainly that it is not the right hardware for the job rather than mount it and hope.
The Current Plan Lineup, and What Changed This Month
Get this wrong and you either overpay for coverage you don’t need or hit a data cap on a trip you actually needed to finish. Three tiers matter here:
- Local Priority fits a boat that stays in domestic waters — a lake, a river, or coastal cruising that never leaves the country’s own territorial waters. At $30 a month plus data, it is the cheapest of the three and the right fit for most marina and lake-boat customers.
- Personal Maritime fits recreational cruising that crosses into international or open-water territory. As of this week, Starlink extended its vessel-size limit from 40 feet to 60 feet overall, which brings a lot of cruising sailboats that were previously excluded into eligibility. It runs $185 a month with unlimited data in territorial waters worldwide, $6 per gigabyte in “Ocean Mode” beyond 12 nautical miles, and — the actual reason to choose it over a standard Roam plan — no 30-day cap on international travel, which is the limitation that used to force extended cruisers to keep re-registering their plan.
- Global Priority sits above Personal Maritime, aimed at commercial vessels and heavier-demand users needing land-and-ocean coverage without the 60-foot restriction. It replaced the old “Mobile Priority” name in 2025 and runs $150 a month plus data in bulk buckets.
If you’ve seen “Mobile Priority” mentioned anywhere recently, it’s out of date — Starlink retired that name in the 2025 restructuring. And for what it’s worth, the in-motion speed cap Starlink introduced in March 2026 — 100 mph — is not a real-world concern for any vessel we service; it’s worth knowing it exists, but no boat is going to run into it.
Mounting Discipline: Vibration, Salt and Structure
A marine mount answers to different physics than a roof does, and the discipline is different on purpose:
- The mount has to survive vibration and salt, not wind load and snow. Hardware that’s fine bolted to a shingle roof for ten years can corrode or work loose on a hull inside two seasons if it’s the wrong material or the wrong bedding.
- The cable follows the vessel’s existing routes rather than a wall cavity built for it. Every boat is different, and a route planned around what’s already there beats forcing a new one.
- The antenna has to keep clear sky while underway, which means keeping it clear of the shadow cast by a tower, an arch, or a bimini top rather than just clear of trees the way a house install is. A dish that tests clean at the dock can still be shaded once the vessel is moving and the sun angle changes.
- We do not perform structural modification to a vessel. Mounting to existing structure — a sailboat’s arch, a catamaran’s hardtop, a trawler’s rail, or a pontoon’s bimini frame — is the job; cutting into the hull or the deck core is not.
- Follow the spec sheet’s own mounting angle where the hardware calls for it — the Flat High Performance kit’s 8-degree tilt for rainfall is a real spec, not a suggestion, and skipping it is the kind of shortcut that shows up as a support call after the first hard rain offshore.
Lakes, the ICW and Blue Water Are Different Jobs
Not every boat on this page is headed offshore, and the plan and the job scope should match where the vessel actually goes:
- A boat that lives on a lake or stays at a marina, the pattern already established on the Denton post, is the simplest version of this job — the mount discipline is the same, but Local Priority covers the connectivity and there’s no maritime plan overhead to think about.
- A boat that runs the Intracoastal Waterway or coastal routes within the US still fits Local Priority in most cases, since that stays inside domestic waters, though a longer trip is worth a quick call to confirm before you leave the dock.
- A boat headed offshore or crossing into another country’s waters is where Personal Maritime or Global Priority actually earns its cost, specifically because of the no-30-day-cap feature neither Local Priority nor a standard Roam plan carries.
Getting this scoping conversation right before the mount goes on is worth more than any hardware choice, because the wrong plan on the right hardware still leaves you either overpaying or capped out mid-trip.
