The question that actually matters is not “can I put Starlink in my truck.” It’s which kit, which mount, and which plan — get any one of the three wrong and you have paid for hardware that either won’t legally run while you drive or will drain your battery flat by morning. A personal vehicle is not a scaled-down RV and it is not a fleet vehicle, and most of what gets written about “Starlink for cars” is actually written for one of those two other things. An RV has a house battery bank sized for it. A fleet buys in bulk at a fleet rate and standardizes on one mount across identical vans.
A personal car or truck has neither: a stock alternator and starting battery, one roof, and an owner who wants a straight answer about what will actually work driving to a job site, a trailhead, or across three states, without turning the vehicle into a science project. That is what this page is for. Before spending anything, run a baseline check at speedtest.net on whatever you’re using now, so you have a real number to compare against once the dish is up.
Which Kit Actually Works in a Moving Vehicle
Here is the decision, stated plainly, because most of the confusion online is old information.
- Starlink Mini — the practical default for most personal vehicles. Officially supported for in-motion use on Roam, averages 25-40 watts, light enough to mount without reinforcing anything. Lower throughput than the larger kits, which is a fair trade for a single vehicle.
- Performance Kit — for vehicles wanting real throughput on the move. Motion-rated, averages 75-100 watts, a meaningfully bigger power ask than the Mini.
- Flat High Performance — genuinely more hardware than a personal car needs. Averages 110-150 watts and is built for demanding mobile and marine use. Named here for completeness; if a caller is actually asking about this kit, they usually mean a boat or a heavy overlanding rig, not a daily driver.
- Standard dish — contested, not clean. It has FCC approval to operate in motion, but Starlink’s own sales policy toward pairing it with Roam has changed more than once, and current reporting states it is not the kit Starlink recommends for sustained driving use, with some reports of warranty risk if it’s run in motion regardless. If a customer already owns a Standard and wants it in a vehicle, the honest answer is: it can work sitting still at a campsite or job site, and we will not represent it to you as a clean in-motion answer.
Two plan facts catch people out. Mobile Priority does not exist anymore — Starlink restructured in 2025 into Local Priority (domestic use, including a state’s own lakes and rivers, vehicles included) and Global Priority (international and open ocean, aimed at maritime and heavy mobile use). For a car or truck staying inside the US, Local Priority or a plain Roam plan is what applies; Global Priority is a maritime question, not a road one. And since 3 March 2026, in-motion use on Roam and Priority plans is capped at 100 mph, down from a legacy 450 mph aviation-era limit. That is far above any speed you’re legally driving, so it changes nothing in practice — it just means the number sometimes quoted online is out of date.
Mounting to a Car or Truck Roof Without Voiding Anything
The mount is where this differs most from a house install, because the roof is thin, it moves, and in a lot of cases it isn’t even yours to modify.
A vehicle roof skin has no joist behind it to catch a screw, the same real problem an RV roof has. The fix is the same one documented for RVs: the mount is bedded into lap sealant before it’s set down, shimmed to follow whatever crown or curve the panel has so it seats continuously rather than bridging a gap, and every bolt head gets sealed over afterward. A single fastener straight through sheet metal with no bedding is how a leak starts two seasons later, quietly, long after anyone connects it to the install.
- On a pickup, a bed-rail or headache-rack mount usually beats the cab roof outright — it keeps the roofline and paint untouched and puts the dish somewhere you can actually reach it.
- On an SUV or a van used as a personal vehicle, a low-profile roof mount bolted through into structure, clear of any existing roof rack or vent, is the standard answer, with the cable coming down through a sealed grommet rather than a door seal.
- If the vehicle is leased, or you simply do not want a hole in the roof, a clamp onto an existing roof rack or bed rail avoids penetration entirely. Be clear-eyed about the trade: a clamped or magnetic mount is a parked-use solution. It is not something to trust at sustained highway speed, so if you need genuine in-motion connectivity on a vehicle you can’t modify, the honest answer is that a rack-clamp mount is the compromise, not magnets or suction cups on bare steel.
The cable never runs through the roof of the cab. It follows the same rule as every other install this company does: down the outside, clipped every foot with no sag, into a low, sealed entry point, never through the roof itself.
Power Without Killing Your Battery
Wired straight to the starting battery and left running, a Starlink kit will flatten a personal vehicle’s battery well before morning — this is not a hypothetical, it is the single most common mistake self-installers make. The fix is to wire through an ignition-switched circuit, or to an auxiliary battery with a low-voltage cutoff, so the dish only draws power when the vehicle is actually on or you’ve made a deliberate decision to run it parked.
Size the expectation to the kit. A Mini at 25-40 watts is a modest, close-to-negligible draw with the engine running. A Performance kit at 75-100 watts is a real ask if you’re planning to run it for hours with the engine off — that is a job for a dedicated auxiliary battery and some solar, not the factory electrical system alone. Cold weather adds to either number, since the dish clears snow and frost with its own waste heat rather than a separate heater element, so draw climbs in bursts rather than by a fixed figure.
Cars, Trucks and RVs Are Not the Same Job
It’s worth being direct about where this page stops, so nobody buys the wrong service.
If you’re outfitting three or more vehicles for a business, the Mobile Fleets page covers volume pricing and yard scheduling, and it will save you money over booking each vehicle through this page individually. If you’re outfitting a motorhome or travel trailer, the coach has a house battery bank and a different mounting job entirely — start with a page like our RV Starlink installation guide for the mount and power discipline that actually applies to a coach roof. This page is for the vehicle in between: one car or one truck, one owner, driven daily or taken on the road a few times a year.
What This Costs
Mobile installation for a personal vehicle starts at $650, the same mobile/RV tier used across this company’s pricing, covering the mount, sealing, cable routing and entry, interior termination, aiming and a speed test before the technician leaves. A virtual survey is free; an on-site survey is $199 where the mount location needs assessing first. Full detail, including how fleet and residential pricing differ, is on the Starlink installation cost page.
Where We Come to You
We come to the vehicle: a driveway, a shop, a storage lot, or wherever it’s parked when the kit arrives. Typical scheduling is within about 72 hours of a confirmed job once the hardware is on site, in all 50 states. Full coverage is on the locations we serve page.
What We Do Not Do
- We do not sell Starlink hardware or service plans, and we do not manage your account or move you between plan tiers.
- We do not perform vehicle electrical work beyond terminating cleanly at an existing ignition circuit or an auxiliary battery. A vehicle needing new circuits first needs an auto electrician.
- We do not fabricate custom racks or modify a vehicle’s body or structure. We mount to existing structure, rack systems, or bed rails.
- We do not install or service dash cameras, telematics, or other vehicle electronics beyond the connectivity itself.
Starlink Installation for Cars and Trucks: Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, with the right hardware and plan. The Mini is officially supported for in-motion use on Roam and draws about 25-40 watts, making it the practical choice for most personal vehicles. The Performance Kit is also motion-rated for those wanting more throughput, at a meaningfully higher power draw. The Standard dish’s in-motion status is contested rather than clean — it has FCC approval to move, but current reporting says Starlink does not recommend it for sustained driving use. As of March 2026, in-motion speed on Roam and Priority plans is capped at 100 mph, far above any legal driving speed.
It will if it’s wired straight to the starting battery and left running — that’s the single most common self-install mistake. Wiring through an ignition-switched circuit, or to an auxiliary battery with a low-voltage cutoff, is the fix, and it’s part of a professional install.
Only where it makes sense and you’re comfortable with it. The mount is bedded into lap sealant and sealed at every bolt head, the same technique documented for RV roofs, because a vehicle roof has the same no-joist problem. If you’d rather not drill at all, a clamp onto an existing roof rack or bed rail avoids penetration, with the honest caveat that a clamped mount is a parked-use solution, not something to trust at sustained highway speed.
Mobile installation starts at $650, covering the mount, sealing, cable routing, interior termination, aiming and a speed test. A virtual survey is free and an on-site survey is $199 where needed.
If you’re buying for three or more vehicles as a business, the Mobile Fleets page has volume pricing built for that. One personal vehicle is this page.
Usually, yes. A clamp onto an existing roof rack or bed rail avoids drilling entirely. Be aware this is a parked-use mount, not one to rely on at sustained highway speed — if you need genuine in-motion connectivity on a vehicle you can’t modify, tell us up front so we can talk through the trade-off before you book.
Roam or Local Priority, not Global Priority — Global Priority is built for international and open ocean use, which a domestic road trip doesn’t need. Mobile Priority, if you’ve seen it mentioned online, no longer exists as a plan name; Starlink retired it in 2025.
We come to you — a driveway, a shop, or a storage lot, wherever the vehicle is when the kit is on site. Scheduling is typically within about 72 hours of a confirmed job.

Had a Starlink mini installed. Tech got right to it and got cables run through the crawl space and into my “Comms closet” in my garage. Tech was familiar with the Hardy siding on the house and was able to get the mini mounted with no issues. Antenna was aligned and tested and working in short order. Whole heartedly recommend Nationwide Installation Techs. Install was done in Coupeville, WA.+2Posted on Google![]()

Although the tech had some problems the first time he came out, he and his team stuck with me until a successful solution was found. Professionally done, honest, the second trip did the job. The Starlink AI agent was singularly unhelpful; but Nationwide Installation Techs LLC filled the gap with real humans who understood the problem and got the correct equipment and installed it properly. Now I have great TV and WiFi service in a remote part of the Colorado mountains.Posted on Google![]()

From first contact with Grant at their Tx call center to a rapid installation date was a great experience! Grant never pressed, in fact, we landed up talking about other things we had in common. The local installer was prompt and friendly and handled a difficult job with a great can do attitude! In an era of hurry up to make a decision then wait in line, this whole process was exceptional! Coming from me who spent 30 years in sales and marketing can be hard to impress…this whole process from start to finish was very impressive!Posted on Google![]()

Game-Changer for Rural Internet! Living in a rural area, reliable high-speed internet has always been a challenge. We don’t have fiber, and while we have Spectrum cable, it’s pricey and inconsistent. For four years, I relied on a Verizon home setup with a mesh system, which was just okay—until that equipment failed and I had to upgrade to their newer version. It was an absolute disaster. Nothing worked consistently: my Ring doorbells wouldn't connect, and our TVs constantly buffered. Desperate for a real solution, a friend recommended Starlink, and I decided to go all-in on their top-tier plan. With a large, three-story, 5,000-square-foot home and an unobstructed view of the sky, I was blown away from day one. Remarkably, Starlink’s router alone provided coverage across the entire house before I even added a mesh system. Though I went ahead and installed a new mesh setup for maximum strength in every single corner, the baseline performance on day one was already incredible. Even better? It was installed on a wall mount attached to our gable, which was quick and easy. We hit one minor snag initially when the contracted installers wouldn't climb the roof, but Starlink's support team stepped in immediately. I honestly have to say: that was the best customer service I have ever experienced in my 59 years of living. They resolved the issue seamlessly and went above and beyond. I was also deeply concerned about how satellite internet would handle bad weather. Literally the night it was installed, it was storming and raining heavily—yet every device stayed connected without a single glitch. We’ve had a few severe storms since, and I haven't experienced a single drop in service. If you have an unobstructed view of the sky and are tired of unreliable options, I cannot recommend Starlink enough.
