Almost every address inside the city already has a wire, and a large share of these roofs belong to a landlord. Both matter for figuring out whether Starlink is the right fit at your address, and we’d rather walk through that with you upfront than after a technician has driven out. Check your own street number on speedtest.net rather than trusting a neighbourhood coverage map, because in this city the answer changes block to block. Where we are genuinely useful starts about fifteen miles west of downtown, where the suburbs stop and the townships begin: Medina, Corcoran, Loretto, Independence and Greenfield in Hennepin County, then across the line into Wright County at Rockford, Hanover, Saint Michael and Delano, out to Watertown in Carver County, north to Dayton, and south past Credit River toward Elko New Market. Add to that the hobby farms, the shops set back off the road, and the specific city addresses where the fiber build simply stopped at the end of a block.

Minneapolis Gets Colder Than the Dish Is Rated For

The Starlink Standard specification sheet lists an operating temperature range of -30°C to 50°C, which is -22°F to 122°F. Minneapolis has been to -34°F, and January here averages a low around 7°F with subzero nights arriving in runs rather than one at a time. Read those two numbers together and you get the thing nobody selling you an install will mention: several nights a winter, this city is colder than the number on the sheet.

In practice the electronics usually keep going, because the antenna makes its own heat while it works and that is also how it clears snow, up to about 40 mm an hour on the Standard. What we see give up first is never the dish. It is the mount and the seal. Sealant that went on in July at 90°F and again at -20°F in January has been asked to move through a 110 degree range, and cheap sealant simply cracks. A bolt into a rafter loosens as the wood cycles. Water gets into a hole that was fine for two summers. That is why the sealing on a Minneapolis job is not a finishing step we do at the end if there is time: sealant goes in and around every pilot hole, around the full base edge of the mount, and over every exposed bolt head, and the cable gets a full drip loop below the entry so water runs off the low point instead of tracking into the wall.

Most of this city is asphalt shingle on a fairly steep pitch, which suits the pivot mount, and it goes high on the roof plane just below the ridge or straddling the ridge cap, never mid-slope and never on the garage. If you have asked for nothing drilled at all, or the house sits in a historic district, the ballasted mount is the documented answer for both flat and pitched roofs, weighed down with pavers or block caps and tied with metal tie-wire where wind is a concern.

Whatever the mount, the connection has to reach the rest of the property, and on a city lot the building that actually needs it is often not the house. A detached garage off the alley, a workshop, a studio over the garage or a second building on an acreage west of town is a point-to-point wireless bridge job rather than a trenching job, and we would rather put a radio on each building than cut your driveway open.

The Boulevard Canopy Is the Obstruction, Not the Skyline

People expect a city to be blocked by buildings. Outside the downtown core Minneapolis is low-rise, so the buildings are rarely the problem. The boulevard trees are. This city grew a serious tree canopy over its residential streets, and a mature elm, ash or silver maple standing between the curb and the sidewalk will be taller than the two-storey house behind it and will sit directly in the southern sky the dish needs.

Two things follow from that, and both are worth knowing before anybody quotes you. The first is that a summer survey and a winter survey give different answers on the same lot, because a bare canopy in February passes a signal that the same tree in full leaf in July will not. We plan for leaf-on, not leaf-off, which sometimes means the mount goes somewhere that looks unnecessary in the winter. The second is that the fix is almost always geometry rather than tree work. Moving the mount to the other end of the ridge, going to the gable peak on a standard wall mount, or picking up a few feet of height will clear a canopy far more often than people assume. We are not going to suggest you take down a boulevard tree, and in this city that is not your tree to take down anyway.

Know Your Options: Fiber, Cable and Where Satellite Still Wins

If Quantum Fiber or US Internet serves your address, it’s worth a look. USI runs symmetrical service up to 10 Gbps through parts of south Minneapolis, a strong option on upload, latency and price. The same applies to most of the 55406, 55407, 55408, 55409 and 55410 area, which has more competing options than anywhere else in the city. Xfinity cable reaches nearly every address here too, at a lower price point for ordinary household use.

If you rent, the roof is not yours to drill and a landlord’s written permission is not a formality. There are ways to do this on a balcony or a wall without a penetration, but check first.

If your kit is a Standard on a simple, accessible roof and you are comfortable on a ladder, Starlink sells its own installation at checkout through OnTech for around $199, free on the MAX plan. We are the better call when the roof is steep, when the run is long or awkward, when the sealing has to survive a Minneapolis winter, or when more than one building needs to be covered.

Satellite wins inside the city as a second line, too. If you work from home and an outage costs you real money, a dish alongside the wire is a genuine answer, and that is a different purchase from replacing your ISP.

Where We Stop and a Roofer, an Arborist or an Electrician Starts

  • We do not do tree work. No trimming, no removal, no exceptions, and the boulevard trees are city property regardless. If the only fix is tree work, we will tell you and you can decide.
  • We do not repair or replace roofs. If a technician gets up there and finds soft decking or shingles at the end of their life, we stop and tell you rather than bolting a mast to it.
  • We do not clear snow or ice from roofs, and we do not remove ice dams. That is a licensed trade with its own insurance, and doing it badly wrecks a roof.
  • We do not run new electrical circuits. Cable entry, a drip loop, a sealed grommet and an interior wall plate are ours. A new outlet is an electrician’s.
  • We do not sell you the Starlink service plan or open the account. You own the hardware and hold the account. We handle the install.

Frequently Asked Questions

It hit thirty below last week. Does the dish just quit?

Usually not, but you are right to ask, because the Standard dish is rated to -22°F and Minneapolis goes past that. The antenna generates heat while it runs, which is also how it melts snow, so it generally keeps working through a cold snap. What actually fails in this climate is the mount and the sealant, which is why we specify sealant rated for the full swing and seal every pilot hole, the base edge and every exposed bolt head rather than just running a bead around the plate.

There is a boulevard elm right over my roof. Does it have to come down?

No, and it is not yours to take down in any case. A mature boulevard tree in the southern sky is the most common obstruction in this city, and the fix is nearly always geometry: the other end of the ridge, the gable peak on a wall mount, or a few more feet of height. We survey for leaf-on conditions rather than a bare February canopy, so the position we choose still works in July.

Our garage is off the alley and has no connection. Can you get one out there?

Yes, and a cable is usually the wrong way to do it. A point-to-point wireless bridge puts a small radio on the house and another on the garage and links them without cutting the driveway or the yard open. It is the same approach we use for a shop or a second building on an acreage west of town, and it is generally cheaper than trenching across a city lot.

USI Fiber just lit up our block in Longfellow. Should I cancel the install?

That is worth a close look. Symmetrical fiber at those speeds is hard to beat on upload, latency and price for most households. If you would rather go that route, just let us know and we will sort out any deposit, no hassle. Plenty of people in that spot still go ahead with the dish as a backup line, since an outage costs real money, a different purchase from replacing your main connection, and we are glad to do either one.

The landlord owns the roof. Is there anywhere else a dish can go?

Often, but get written permission before we come out. A balcony rail, a wall, or a ballasted mount that puts no hole in anything can all work depending on what the sky looks like from that side of the building. What we will not do is drill someone’s roof on a tenant’s say-so.

We are out past Corcoran on five acres. Does the drive change what we pay?

No. Residential pricing starts at $385 whether you are in Powderhorn or sixteen miles west in Corcoran. What changes the number is the work itself: mast height, the length and difficulty of the cable run, and whether a second building needs covering. You will have that figure before anyone gets on a ladder.

Our house sits in a historic district. Does that rule out a roof mount?

It rules out putting holes in it, which is a different thing. The non-penetrating ballasted mount is made for exactly this and works on both flat and pitched roofs: the mount is weighed down with pavers or block caps rather than bolted through, and we tie the weights with metal tie-wire where wind is a concern. Check your district’s rules on visible equipment first, because those vary block to block.

Snow slides off our roof in sheets every March. Where does the dish go?

Away from the slide path, which usually means high on the plane near the ridge or up at the gable peak rather than lower down where a sheet of snow can take a mast with it. This is one of the questions a virtual survey answers well, because we can see the roof geometry and the eave line before anyone commits to a position.
