A Four Winds is a Class C on a Ford E-Series cutaway, with a Chevrolet chassis offered on the ESpec trims, and that construction decides almost everything about where a dish can go. The roof is a domed membrane over a framed deck rather than a steel plate, the air conditioner, the vents and the solar panel have already taken the center of it, and a roof ladder comes standard at the back. Those three facts, not the dish itself, are what a good install works around.
What a Four Winds Roof Gives You to Work With
Walk the roof of a Four Winds — and Thor builds it to be walked on — and the usable area is smaller than it looks from the ground. The covering is a premium one-piece TPO membrane, domed rather than flat so it sheds water to the sides. The cab-over bunk takes the front, the 13,500 BTU front air conditioner sits ahead of center, and the roof vents and the 100-watt solar panel that comes as standard are spaced along the middle. What is actually left clear differs from one floorplan to the next, which is why the dish position gets settled on your coach and not from a brochure.
Underneath that membrane is a plywood-reinforced deck over a fully welded tubular aluminum cage, roof and sidewalls both, and that is the combination that carries your weight. The plywood is reinforcement, though, not structure: it is thin, it lies over insulation, and a screw driven into it alone has very little to bite. That distinction is the whole job on a dish, because holding is not the same as carrying a load through a headwind for four hundred miles. So we find the aluminum members underneath and set the mount on those, which puts the load into the cage and leaves the plywood doing nothing but keeping the seal intact.
Height is the other constraint people forget. A Four Winds already sits tall, and anything added to the roof becomes part of your clearance number. We keep the dish low and as close to the center as the obstacles allow, so a low branch or a garage entry meets the air conditioner first rather than the hardware we just fitted.
Mounting Options on a Four Winds: Ladder Clamp and Penetrating Mobility Mounts
Two mounts cover the overwhelming majority of Four Winds jobs, and which one suits you comes down to whether you are willing to put a hole in the roof.
Ladder clamp mounts. The factory ladder on the rear wall is a ready-made structure, and a clamp bracket grips its rails without a single fastener entering the coach. It is the fastest option, it leaves nothing behind if you sell, and it is the obvious answer on a leased or nearly new rig where an owner does not want the roof touched. The trade-off is position: the ladder is at the back and at the edge, so the dish sits off-center and a tall rear cap or an awning arm can clip the lower part of its view. On a coach that mostly parks in open campgrounds that costs you nothing. Under trees it can be the difference between a usable signal and a marginal one.
Penetrating mobility mounts. This is the one most Four Winds owners end up choosing. The mount is bolted down onto the roof structure itself, which puts the dish where the sky is best rather than where the ladder happens to be, and it holds a far more confident line at highway speed because the load goes into the frame instead of a clamped rail. It does mean drilling, and that is exactly why the sealing method below matters as much as the bracket.
There is no universally correct answer between the two. On a rig that tows to a seasonal site and sits, the ladder clamp is often the sensible, reversible choice. On a coach that covers real distance and parks somewhere different every few days, the bolted mobility mount is the one that stops being thought about after the first trip.
Cable Entry, Seaview Glands and Why the Sealant Is a Marine Product
Any time we put the cable through the roof, it goes through a Seaview cable gland. A gland is a purpose-made fitting that clamps around the cable and seals the opening properly, instead of the common workaround of a hole and a mound of silicone that cracks by the second summer. It also stays serviceable: the cable can be pulled or replaced later without reopening the roof.
Both the gland and the mount are bedded in a generous amount of marine sealant. Not a thin bead for appearance, a proper quantity that fills the joint.
We use a marine product deliberately. It is formulated for the exterior of a hull, including the part that sits under water, so a rain-soaked roof is a far easier environment than what it was designed for. More to the point on a motorhome, it holds up to constant vibration and to weather cycling without going brittle. That is the failure people actually see with ordinary sealant on an RV: it looks fine at handover, then a season of road buzz and summer heat puts fine cracks through it, and water starts tracking in somewhere nobody is looking. A marine sealant stays flexible and keeps the joint closed.
Driving With It Running, or Only Using It Parked
These are two different jobs and it is worth being clear which one you are buying.
Parked use is the simpler case. The coach is stationary, the dish has time to find the sky, and the mount only has to survive the drive between sites rather than perform during it. Most Four Winds owners are in this category and a straightforward setup serves them well.
Using it while the coach is moving is a different specification: the hardware has to be the kind intended for in-motion operation, and the service plan has to permit it. Both halves matter, and getting one without the other is the usual reason somebody is disappointed. Our guide to which kit suits in-motion use sets out which hardware and which plan actually allow it. Tell us at the quote stage which way you intend to use the coach and the build is specified for that from the start.
Power on a Four Winds and What the House Batteries Will Carry
A Standard dish draws roughly 75 to 100 watts while it is running. On shore power that is irrelevant. Off grid it is the number that decides whether the setup is pleasant or annoying.
The feed comes off the house bank, never off the starting battery. The chassis battery has one job on a Class C and flattening it at a boondocking site to keep a router alive is a bad trade. We run the circuit from the coach side, fused properly, and put the router somewhere it is not going to bake in an overhead cabinet against the front cap in August.
If you are running solar, hand that wattage figure to whoever sized the array and the bank. We are not electricians and we do not size solar systems, but the load number is the thing they need and we will always give it to you.
What a Thor Four Winds Starlink Installation Costs
RV and mobile work opens at $650. What moves it is the mount you choose, how far the cable has to travel inside the coach, and whether anything has to be worked around on the roof. A ladder clamp on a clear rear wall is at the quick end. A bolted mobility mount with a long interior run and a tight route past the air conditioner takes longer and is priced accordingly.
You are quoted before we start and the figure does not move once work begins. Our technicians arrive with the mount, the gland, the sealant, the cable and the clips already on the van, so nothing about your appointment waits on a parts run. The full breakdown of what a Starlink install costs is set out elsewhere on the site.
The Four Winds Sprinter Is Not the Same Coach
Thor sells a Four Winds Sprinter alongside the Ford-based Four Winds, and although the name is shared the two are different vehicles to work on. The Sprinter version is built on a Mercedes-Benz chassis, it is a diesel, and the roof profile and height it presents are not the same as the E-Series coach this page describes.
Everything above is written for the Ford E-Series Four Winds, and the ESpec trims on the Chevrolet chassis share the same coach construction. If yours is the Sprinter, say so when you call. The mounting logic carries over but the specifics do not, and we would rather establish that on the phone than discover it in your driveway.
What We Do Not Do
- We are not a Starlink dealer. The kit and the service plan come from Starlink and stay in your name. What you buy from us is the fitting.
- We do not do coach electrical work. Running a new circuit or resizing a battery bank is an RV technician’s or an electrician’s job. We take a properly fused feed from the existing house system and stop there.
- We do not repair roofs. If the membrane is lifting or a previous fitting has left a soft patch, that gets put right before we mount anything to it.
- We do not fit to a coach we have not been told the truth about. If the roof has been drilled before, tell us. Finding an old hole under a bracket halfway through is the one thing that turns a straightforward morning into a problem.
- No connection to Starlink or SpaceX. We are an independent installer.
Thor Four Winds Starlink Installation Questions
Yes, and on a Four Winds it is genuinely practical because the factory ladder gives us something solid to clamp to. Nothing enters the coach and the whole thing comes off cleanly if you sell. The compromise is that the dish ends up at the rear corner rather than out in the open, so under heavy tree cover it will not see as much sky as a mount placed properly on the roof.
The penetrating mobility mount. It puts the dish where the sky is instead of where the ladder is, and it is steadier at speed because the load is carried by the roof framing. Owners who want nothing drilled, or who are not keeping the coach long, go with the ladder clamp instead, and that is a perfectly good install.
A Seaview cable gland, bedded in marine sealant. The gland is a proper fitting that closes around the cable rather than a hole filled with silicone, and it can be opened later if the cable ever needs replacing. The sealant goes on generously at both the gland and the mount feet.
Because it is built for the outside of a boat hull, including the submerged part, so a motorhome roof is a mild environment by comparison. The property that matters here is that it resists vibration and weather without hardening. Ordinary sealant on a vehicle that buzzes down the interstate all summer tends to craze and crack, and once it cracks the joint is open.
Only if the hardware is the in-motion type and the plan you hold permits it. Both have to be true. Plenty of owners never need it and a parked setup suits them perfectly well. Tell us which you want before we quote, because it changes what gets fitted.
Most Four Winds installs are done in a single visit of a few hours. A ladder clamp with a short cable route is quicker; a bolted mount with a long interior run and an awkward path around the air conditioner takes the longer end of that. We do not leave until a speed test has been run in front of you.
No. We come to the coach, whether that is a driveway, a storage lot or a campground site. That is the whole point of the service and it is why our technicians carry the complete parts kit with them.
From $650. The mount type, the cable run and anything that has to be worked around on the roof set where in the range a particular coach lands. You get the number before any work starts.

Although the tech had some problems the first time he came out, he and his team stuck with me until a successful solution was found. Professionally done, honest, the second trip did the job. The Starlink AI agent was singularly unhelpful; but Nationwide Installation Techs LLC filled the gap with real humans who understood the problem and got the correct equipment and installed it properly. Now I have great TV and WiFi service in a remote part of the Colorado mountains.Posted on Google![]()

From first contact with Grant at their Tx call center to a rapid installation date was a great experience! Grant never pressed, in fact, we landed up talking about other things we had in common. The local installer was prompt and friendly and handled a difficult job with a great can do attitude! In an era of hurry up to make a decision then wait in line, this whole process was exceptional! Coming from me who spent 30 years in sales and marketing can be hard to impress…this whole process from start to finish was very impressive!Posted on Google![]()

Game-Changer for Rural Internet! Living in a rural area, reliable high-speed internet has always been a challenge. We don’t have fiber, and while we have Spectrum cable, it’s pricey and inconsistent. For four years, I relied on a Verizon home setup with a mesh system, which was just okay—until that equipment failed and I had to upgrade to their newer version. It was an absolute disaster. Nothing worked consistently: my Ring doorbells wouldn't connect, and our TVs constantly buffered. Desperate for a real solution, a friend recommended Starlink, and I decided to go all-in on their top-tier plan. With a large, three-story, 5,000-square-foot home and an unobstructed view of the sky, I was blown away from day one. Remarkably, Starlink’s router alone provided coverage across the entire house before I even added a mesh system. Though I went ahead and installed a new mesh setup for maximum strength in every single corner, the baseline performance on day one was already incredible. Even better? It was installed on a wall mount attached to our gable, which was quick and easy. We hit one minor snag initially when the contracted installers wouldn't climb the roof, but Starlink's support team stepped in immediately. I honestly have to say: that was the best customer service I have ever experienced in my 59 years of living. They resolved the issue seamlessly and went above and beyond. I was also deeply concerned about how satellite internet would handle bad weather. Literally the night it was installed, it was storming and raining heavily—yet every device stayed connected without a single glitch. We’ve had a few severe storms since, and I haven't experienced a single drop in service. If you have an unobstructed view of the sky and are tired of unreliable options, I cannot recommend Starlink enough. It is an absolute game-changer!Posted on Google![]()
